I love to paint on location and for many years have "whipped out" a full sheet (22"x30") on location in about 3 hours painting time. Lately I have been revisiting these paintings and realizing they don't feel resolved to me. I will be sharing several of these "before and after" paintings with you - changing them each month. As always, I value your feedback.

"In My Father's Garden" - Before |
"In My Father's Garden" - After |
I did this full-sheet watercolor painting soon after my father died. He and I had spent many hours together tending flowers this was done in his memory. Several years later I looked at the piece again and realized it needed more work.
First off the contrast between the darks and lights was way too strong in the heart of the bouquet so I lifted there and added subtle detail to the hidden foliage. I also felt the upper right area needed to be broken up more so I added the purple stems and blooms. A few other adjustments to the yellow gladiola blooms and a bit of calligraphy and I was happy with it. This is one of the few paintings that I have done that I am choosing to keep for my collection, but gicleé prints are available on request. The original painting measures 30" high by 22" wide.
Let me hear what you think and if you like the "Fine Tuning Watercolors" page.
