About "Red Crate, Yellow Seedlings, Blue Glass"

I’ve been either in the yard on hands and knees pulling weeds, digging and planting this last month or in the studio making watercolors of the stuff to be planted.  Every spring it is the same thing, some DNA from my father comes racing to the fore and I find myself extremely grubby and extremely happy outside in the yard for hours a day.  I pay for it with sore everything the next day, but I don’t quit.

These Zinnia babies were just too lovely to put in the ground without painting them.  I arranged them on my worktable “a la Charles Reid” with objects of assorted colors and shapes trying to remember to stay in a primary color scheme.  Ok, I let some secondary colors sneak in there, but I mixed them with the original three!

As always I set up the stillife and lit it from the side and a little to the back, using the shadow shapes to tie the disparate objects together.  To achieve the brilliant spring light and colors I limited the background to shades of white and saved white bits throughout to give a sparkle to the painting.
