Artist Statement
This painting was done on location in Ireland at the ancestral home of my dear friend Rita Lett. The Manor House is located at the end of a long tree-line drive and is flat-out gorgeous. I also glimpsed this small cottage just beyond the gate. It might have been the gatehouse at one time. Gorgeous red shutters and door and pots of red geraniums offset the white walls and thatched roof. I walked down to the cottage with my students and as we had little time to work (rain coming of course) I did an ink and stick drawing on Arches paper (see below).
It did begin to rain and we fled to Rita’s beautiful studio. There I placed the original ink drawing on the window and with Arches paper on top traced the drawing. I painted this as a demo for the class the next day – when it was raining. We had gorgeous cool and sunny weather for 5 days and only 2 days of “a fine soft day” sprinkles.
